CoverAmericaTour.org (no longer active) was a short-term website to foster community around a tour of the county in summer 2008. Three consumer advocates took to the road in a “Big Blue” RV to gather personal stories from people about their experiences with health insurance. The tour was sponsored by Consumer Reports Health.
A Google app displayed the route of the tour through the lower 48 states. Pushpins marked events, suggested stops, blog posts and video added to the site on a daily basis. The site also featured a Flickr photo slideshow and participation with our supporters — as people uploaded their photo to Flickr, they received a free tee-shirt in the mail. Video content was uploaded daily by the team on the road. Over a 100 videos could be viewed by topic through a customized Brightcove player. I handled all graphics and web design, building the site with Movable Type. Stories were collected with a customized database that was built by another member of our team.
